Drag the points along the outline and watch d change. What you don't touch gets rewritten exactly as it was — that's why the result stays readable instead of turning into a wall of cubics.

Drag a node to move it.
Hold Alt to drag the whole stroke.
Hold Shift and the arrow keys move in steps of 0.1.
Pen tool — click to place points. Esc
What you are looking at
- node — drag it to move the point
- selected node
- start of the subpath
- end of the subpath
- bézier handle — bends the curve into it
- the icon's real stroke, dimmed so the nodes stay reachable underneath
